ISRO building IN-SPACe for private space industries

ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) is building Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Center (IN -SPACe) ,an autonomous nodal agency, under Department of Space to permit and regulate the activities of private space industries in India. On June 25, ISRO released a briefing where it announced that IN-SPACe is being built to give opportunities to the private players. It further said that IN-SPACe will act as a "national nodal agency" to promote private industries and ISRO  will share its technologies and facilities to help them grow. It said, " IN-SPACe will have its own independent Directorates for Technical, Legal, Safety & Security, Monitoring as well as Activities Promotion for assessing the private industry requirements and further coordinating the activities". This step is a part of transforming India to become "self-reliant" through a set of "socio-economic reforms".  It said, "The reforms in the space sector are aimed at tapping the potential of entire country for unlocking its potential by enabling private enterprises and start-ups to undertake end-to-end space activities. In addition, the reforms are also aimed at mitigating the large and upfront investments required to set up facilities for undertaking space activities through sharing of such existing facilities under ISRO". Entry of private industries in space programmes is going to be a very important step towards the growth of space innovations and programmes in India. It will also accelerate job creations in India. According to ISRO, this step will enable Indian Space Industry to be a significant player in global space economy. "The private industry will also be offered opportunities to undertake R&D activities and be co-traveller in advanced inter-planetary missions.  This is planned through a series of Announcement of Opportunities. Opportunities in Human Space Flight Programme is already announced" - ISRO announced. Reforms are being taken to re-define and strengthen NewSpace India Ltd.(NSIL). According to ISRO, it will help ISRO to focus on the research and development of Indian Space Programmes. Private industries will be offered to use ISRO's resources and facilities to help them grow in the areas of  launch vehicle & satellite production, launch services as well as space based services. It said, " ISRO will continue to carry out its present activities with greater emphasis on development of advanced technology, missions and capacity building besides supporting private endeavours in space sector". Proposal of a new Navigation Policy and changes in Remote Sensing Data Policy and SATCOM Policy is on the way. ISRO will shortly conduct a webinar on Space Sector Reforms where it will share more details of IN-SPACe mechanism and application requirements.
